Manish Chandra and his wife Suman Priya, the husband-wife duo, being journey fanatics, would often find it challenging to get decent food on train journeys. It was while reckoning on this that they came up with a unique business prototype to establish a connection between prominent food chains and restaurants and the trains, thus unravelling the difficulty of the availability of excellent food. They started an e-catering company called RailRestro in 2015. RailRestro is an online platform that guarantees that people get quality food during their train journeys.

RailRestro, an authorised e-catering partner of IRCTC, is attempting to meet the troubles in terms of non-deliveries due to train delays and other situations through its partnership with companies that are in the same slot. RailRestro has done a substantial R & D to expand comprehensive menu items along with their empanelled sellers that suit best for the train travellers along with promotional offers to make the customer’s food adventure an extraordinary one filled out with a convenient and user-friendly ordering system. Expenses can be made quickly online while placing the order or can pay on delivery of the food too.

Marketplace-like Business model

RailRestro endeavours on a marketplace-like business model. They have a massive network of vendor tie-ups with restaurants across India. People travelling by train across India can request food via the RailRestro website, the app, or call. Travellers require to enter their PNR details or train number input on the website/app.

The platform then brings the details of the passenger in terms of NAP, stations receding en-route, and the restaurants at which they can locate their food orders while travelling. The minimum lead time is 60 minutes to process the order. Passengers can choose between a secure payment gateway or through cash on delivery option. With such drives, the food delivery suspicions would be sorted and will help in proper food delivery in trains.

We made our first pilot project by delivering meals on trains running between Patna and New Delhi. When we found it working, we pushed further on the tie-ups with major restaurants across other routes,” says Manish.

Initiated with two founders and a few fresh graduates who joined in as telesales executive, currently, the team comprises 38 members. For the initial three months, the startup ran on a no-profit and no-loss model. RailRestro earned traction when it partnered with IRCTC and began refining 600 orders a day nine months after starting. It now has an existence in over 375 cities and across 400 stations.

The company’s 2015-16 net revenue stood at Rs 1 crore (gross revenue or GMV was Rs 6 crore). The startup claims to have their vendor network as the largest among the existing players like Hyderabad-based OMitra, RailTiffin, IRCTC-approved players such as Comesum, and even biggies like Jubliant Foodworks and Foodworld. RailRestro’s transparent billing system has made it easy, both for their vendors as well as travellers. It is also planning to go in for a 24/7 food allowance chain across Indian railways.
